An overview of the current use of single-use manufacturing within the Bristol-Myers Squibb manufacturing networks and planned future state.  The challenges in implementing single-use manufacturing for commercial production will be discussed.  Comparisons will be made to the implementation of past improvements and the plans for future improvements, such as continuous processing.

Lance Marquardt is the Associate Director – Upstream Processing for Hopewell Clinical Manufacturing at Bristol-Myers Squibb bringing over 20 years of experience in the production of therapeutic proteins for clinical trials.  Lance was a key member of the team that designed, built and commissioned the first fully single use facility within the BMS manufacturing network and has since managed the facility producing early phase clinical material for numerous BMS projects.  Prior to this facility he had experience utilizing hybrid single use systems.  He received his BS degree in Biotechnology from the University of Wisconsin – River Falls and his MS degree from Kean University.

Sara is a Senior Marketing Manager for Merck’s single-use product portfolio. She manages the development and deployment of the single-use marketing strategy, which is heavily focused on delivering high quality products, with reduced lead times, and an enhanced level of supply security. She previously led the single-use technology management team at Merck, supporting the successful launch of five new products to address end-users’ biggest problems, challenges and unmet needs in single-use processing. Sara has over 14 years of experience in the Biopharmaceutical industry. Prior to joining Merck in 2015, Sara spent 11 years working at Amgen Rhode Island, where she held positions in Process Development, Upstream Manufacturing, Project Management and Quality Control. She holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island.
