Thermo Fisher expands drug development and manufacturing capabilities at CPHI Milan 2026
Posted on October 10, 2026
Thermo Fisher Scientific has unveiled new drug development solutions, expanded manufacturing capacity and additional digital capabilities aimed at helping pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies move programmes more efficiently toward commercialisation.
The company is showcasing the developments at CPHI Milan 2026.
Among the new offerings are OSD Express and Steriles Express Solutions, which provide defined development pathways for oral solid dose and sterile drug product programmes.
Thermo Fisher said the services are designed to improve predictability, reduce complexity and help development programmes progress more efficiently.
OSD Express forms part of the company’s broader Accelerator Drug Development offering, which links scientific expertise and capabilities across drug development, clinical trials, endpoint solutions, clinical supply and laboratory services.
The model is intended to reduce handoffs between different stages of development and provide greater continuity as programmes move toward commercial manufacturing.
Thermo Fisher is also expanding its small molecule capabilities through a collaboration with AustinPx.
The partnership gives customers access to KinetiSol Technology, a solvent free platform designed to improve the bioavailability of poorly soluble medicines and support development through to commercial scale manufacturing.
Additional investments are being made in oral solid dose production.
New Gerteis technology is being introduced in Bourgoin, France, and Whitby, Canada, to support advanced dry granulation and improve tablet manufacturing efficiency.
Thermo Fisher is also expanding serialised packaging capabilities in Cincinnati and Toronto.
For sterile drug products, the company has introduced separate pathways for early development and later stage technology transfer.
Steriles Express Early Development is designed to deliver Phase I or II clinical trial material in as little as 20 weeks.
Steriles Express Tech Transfer is intended to provide a Phase III good manufacturing practice batch in as little as 26 weeks.
The company is continuing to expand sterile drug product capacity at several global sites.
New and expanded manufacturing lines in Plainville, Massachusetts, Monza, Italy, and Ferentino, Italy, are being developed to support both vial and prefilled syringe production.
Fill and finish and drug device capabilities are also being expanded in Ridgefield, New Jersey, including through Thermo Fisher’s previously announced collaboration with SHL Medical.
Thermo Fisher is also applying artificial intelligence, data and digital technologies across clinical development.
The company said generative AI applications have reduced the time required to draft master informed consent forms by 50%.
In some studies, digital tools have also reduced clinical research associate site enrolment and activation activities by between 15% and 30%.
Mike Shafer, Executive Vice President and President of Biopharma Services at Thermo Fisher Scientific, said drug development increasingly depends on capabilities that extend across development, manufacturing, clinical supply and trial execution.
He said the company is focusing not only on increasing capacity but also on improving how these capabilities are connected as customers progress toward commercialisation.
