Roche unveils AXELIOS 1, which is a next-generation sequencing platform set to transform genomic research

Roche has recently unveiled AXELIOS 1, a sequencing platform powered by its pioneering SBX technology. Combining accuracy, speed, adaptability, scalability, and cost efficiency in a single instrument, the platform is designed to remove longstanding barriers in genomics and open new possibilities in clinical research. By equipping researchers with a powerful new tool, AXELIOS 1 is positioned to drive significant scientific discoveries that deepen understanding of disease, with the potential to supersede existing technologies in key areas of investigation.

“AXELIOS 1 will deliver a disruptive sequencing solution that combines high accuracy with unprecedented speed and scalability. These attributes, combined with our high level of cost efficiency, will enable the sequencing community to develop applications that previously were not feasible,” said Matt Sause, CEO of Roche Diagnostics. “Additionally, in the future, AXELIOS 1 has the same potential to enable the next generation of clinical applications and unlock new frontiers in personalised healthcare.”

The platform’s adaptable run configuration and high-throughput architecture allow it to move seamlessly between small-scale investigations and large-scale genomic endeavours, all within a single instrument. Researchers benefit from an open and flexible setup that removes barriers to exploration and creates conditions for entirely new workflows capable of advancing knowledge in complex disease areas.

Real-world performance has been validated through partnerships with leading institutions including Hartwig Medical Foundation and Broad Clinical Labs. Studies conducted through these collaborations confirm that AXELIOS 1 delivers exceptional accuracy and throughput at record-breaking speed and with superior cost efficiency. The platform’s ecosystem extends further through a collaboration with 10x Genomics covering single-cell and spatial application kits, alongside support for SBX via Google DeepVariant and the open-source XOOS tools suite.
