Chinese company to open first U.S. plant in Massachusetts, invest $60 million and bring 150 jobs to Worcester

A Chinese biologics firm announced plans this weekend to invest millions of dollars in their first American facility, to be located in Massachusetts.

WuXi Biologics will open a biologics clinical and commercial manufacturing facility in Worcester. The company said they will invest $60 million and hire approximately 150 employees.

Ge Li, the chairman of WuXi Biologics, said the company was attracted to the proximity to Boston, calling the region “a leader in the biopharmaceutical industry,” adding that “Many partners of WuXi Biologics are located within two hours of this new site.”

He said the facility will play a key role in the company’s bio-manufacturing worldwide and thanked support the company received from local and state officials in choosing Worcester.

“The City of Worcester is thrilled to welcome WuXi Biologics as its first tenant to the new Biomanufacturing Park,” Worcester City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. said in a statment. “As a growing destination in the global biomedical market, the city looks forward to officially opening this impressive campus and is eager to host WuXi Biologics in their first US manufacturing facility.”

The up to 100,000-square-foot plant will be located at the site of the former Worcester State Hospital.
