Application of Internet of Things Framework to Laboratory Data

The idea of the Internet of things (IoT) & smart factory has gained a lot of momentum in recent times in the pharmaceutical industry. IoT has many potential applications for lab automation, troubleshooting non-conformances, sensor selection, and validation to support the design and management of operations from lab scale to plant scale. However, applying the principles of IoT to lab-scale equipment is an interesting challenge due to the lack of tools for data-capture within the CFR 21.11 paradigm. In this presentation, we focus on a framework for data capture, aggregation & curation to build a data lake for lab-scale data. We discuss specific challenges in managing and curating this data lake. Additionally, using case studies we show the value of integrating lab-scale data with manufacturing data for improved product and process understanding.
